portrait help!

im very very new at photography, and luckily i have some great friends who AREN'T new at it, and are more than willing to stare at a camera for hours at a time. i think this picture turned out quite nicely but most of the others did not. im not sure about backdrops, poses, or anything, really! any advice for a newbie?
