Default First outdoor portrait session with model... Warm or cold light?

I am a newcomer to Digital photography. I just equipped myself with serious equipement and I am very passionnate about this new hobbie.

I just did my first photo shoot with a model, outdoor. I worked with the kelvin settings to experiment between warn and cold lighting in my portraits.

I tend to like the colder portaits in this session.

I would appreciate your comments to improve my composition and technique .

All pictures are shot with Canon 5d Mark II with either a Sigma 85mm F1.4 or Canon 70-200 2,8 L II.

This particular one is shot with the 70-200, ISO 100, 175mm, f4, 1/250

The rest of the session can be seen here Vanessa - Outdoor portraits - JADupont's Photos | SmugMug

Many thanks.

Welcome to DPS. Congratulations on your new gear. Nice shot, btw.

Hi and welcome.

Really great set for your first model shoot. Have you tried adjusting the wb in pp? I agree the cool setting is much better.

As for your post I think the pose is nice. I would have liked to see a little more of her far cheek to give more dimension. Watch for bright spots as they distract your eye from the subject.

Thanks Nicolas. For that shoot I adjusted the WB using the Kelvin function, from cold to very warm, as a test.

More cheek and less bright like this?

Yes, more cheek like that one. This one also has a bright area of sun in her hair. Just moving her into full shade will sort this out for you next time. I suspect that even if you shoot in RAW, that her hair will not be recoverable on this occasion

Just a musing but, I think wb is very subjective. For my kind of family portraits it needs to be accurate. I think in fashion photography you can use it to create a mood or look? It does however take time to learn to see colour - but a necessary thing

I think the cold/warm images are all "too far"....Try adjusting them in post. It also seems like the "cold" are underexposed a bit and most of the "warm" a touch hot.

I just did a levels/exposure adjustment on this

Thanks, I agree, your version is better. Just a curve adjustment, right?
