I wish I could see more of his precious face, I'm sure his eyes would of finish the story of the photo... Why are you shooting with ISO 1600 outdoors???

I am extremely new to this, I have never taken a class and just got my camara. I will be taking a class in January but I love to take pics. I am on here to browse and learn and get advice. I don't know much about when And where to use the settings. I take it the iso should have been way lower?

I would say so. A high ISO adds grain or noise to a picture while making it brighter. The lower the ISO the better, unless you happen to be looking for a certain artistic effect. Shutter speed will affect the motion of the image. A higher (or smaller like 1/250 or 1/400) will result in a sharper image motion-wise but a darker image. Lower shutter speeds will give you more potential blur but a brighter image. Shutter speed is a really fun tool to play with at the extreme ends of the spectrum (the highest and lowest). Aperture is going to affect your depth of field, or how much is in focus in an image. The more in focus, or the higher the number of the f stop (like F/22) the darker the image, vice versa.
I would really check out these three settings as they are the fish and potatoes of your camera settings and can drastically change an image based on their settings.

As the for the picture critique, I enjoy the candid feel of the shot, and love the concept. I would possibly do a tighter crop or reveal more of the boy's face if you want to redo the image. Nice work!
