Question Playing Dress Up.

I need advice on sepia.
And What I should do to make it better?
Is the light from that umbrella too much??
Any other advice would be great!
Thanks So much.

Hello Meranda!

Cute kid!

I don't think the light is too much at all in this scenario as it is actually keeping the focus on her face. If the umbrella was somewhere else, then yes, but as it is, it's fine. However, the brightness has put a little bit of tiny overblown exposure on her cheek. This is only an issue because her face is a little underexposed. Fill flash would have helped with this, or the use of lower f/stop (wider aperture). An f/stop of f/4 or under (making sure that the focus is on her eye area) would have improved this photo, bringing a little bit more light to her face plus blurring the background.

I do think that this photo could use some more contrast as it's a little flat. If not contrast, then at least bringing up vibrance.

I'm not a fan of the extreme angle used her, but that's only artistic opinion. I just don't see the benefit of this extreme angle with an image like this. As it is, I'm having to turn my head to look at her properly. Again, though, this is only an aesthetic opinion.

If I was taking this photo, I would have done -1 exposure compensation so the umbrella is not quite as bright, f/4, and if required, fill flash.

Let's see what others have to say, though. Others may find this photo just right, or may complain about the umbrella

Cheers,

Grace

Agree with Grace here. I also would have had the whole hat in the frame, cutting off the umbrella is fine but would have had the hat in. Don't know what caused but I feel with aperture that high and shutter speed just high enough, the photo is not as sharp as it would be.

I personally have a hard time nailing the focus at wider apertures :S I see lot of photos at wide apertures like 1.4, 1.8 that have just the eyes in focus and rest of the face is blurred out.. I don't like that part.. :s

The only thing that is very wrong for me is the angle of the shot....it's very awkward to look at.
