The problem is that you have too much blown areas in the photo. It was quite bright and you need to expose the sky (by underexposing it) and then using fill flash on your subjects.

The blown out hair area on her is fine, it's the other overexposed bits that is not quite ok.

What I would actually do to this photo if it were mine is crop it a lot tighter, getting rid of that sky on the top left. The stairs and especially pavement aren't doing anything to this image, either, so I would just crop it as much as I could.

Your f/stop is too narrow, too. I would have used somethign wider like f/4 to blur out background. Makes your subjects pop out more when you blur backgrounds.

I hope this helps.

Cheers,

Grace

I take the opposite view on this one. Their hair is a more important element of this shot than the little patch of sky (which I agree should cropped out). Blowing out the sky is perfectly acceptable for me when done with intent. If I want the sky to be a contributing part of the image (and I have some cooperating clouds), then I'll underexpose it and bring up the subjects with flash.

For this particular image I find the hair blowout to be distracting. It is coming in at too much of a side angle to be considered a nice rim. I see what you're going for and I like it. It is a cool location and interesting couple, but you might need to wait for some better light, or modify what is available using silks or scrims.

I agree with Mike, the hair on both are blown out too much. May be moving to your left or taking the shot from a higher angle could have helped to get rid of the sky at top left corner.

Get a Yongnuo YN560 flash for practice. It is completely manual so will give you good learning. I have used it for close to a year and I like it.

Use light reflectors, a white foam board to go cheap to modify your light.
