Default Composition with Kids

I am a complete novice. I don't even have a SLR yet, but I am working on composition with my current camera until I can get a DSLR. That said I don't have any info on camera settings but I am looking for feedback on my composition. Trying to capture my own kids in there element and tell their story.
Thanks!!

As far as composition is concerned I like the way you have used the inner side of the enclosure to draw attention to your kid. Not having his face in the center has also helped.

Since he is looking down I would also try to take the shot at a bit lower angle than it is right now.

Smile Needs more focus...

Like the black and white, and it's a really neat idea for a photo. One thing that could have made it better would be focusing on him- eyes specifically- rather than the metal thing he's looking down. His hair is blown out, maybe you can edit that? Composition is okay, I would like to see this using the rule of thirds- I think it would be more interesting.
