Default First shoot with dslr!

I just got a cannon rebel T3 in the mail. I used my daughter for this "shoot". I'm JUST getting into photography so I know these aren't anything special. If you guys could give me some suggestions or point out things you notice that I could be doing differently that would be great.

I think it's a lovely picture. But, I'm only a hobby photographer. I love the basket and the fall feel.

In general, the portrait focus point should be the eyes. Your capture has nice color that really conveys that fall feeling but the focus is more on the basket rim and blanket. I like the pic and the colors and I think it's neat for a first shoot, keep it up! Also I might try a *slightly* closer crop just to make your subject a bit more active in the image.

Just my 2 cents. Thanks for sharing.

JustinB - Thanks for your 2 cents. This first shoot I was really having issues aiming my focus. I think I've got the hang out it now. I figure out how to do something new with my camera everyday.

I agree that the basket works well in this fall leaves scene and i think you managed to come up with a great concept for this type of portrait.
You already got the focus comment so for me the other thing is I feel like the basket and baby are looking into the right hand side of the frame and so the empty space wants to be on that side and not the left.

Default Playing with where your camera will focus

Hello, I just wanted to point out to you that you can change where your camera is focusing. Sometimes I accidentally move it and don't realize until I look at what I shot and wonder why it focused somewhere else. I have a Nikon D5000 but look at your manual to make sure how yours works. Mine I can just arrow over left or right, up or down to change where the little focus square is You may not always want the focus dead center- it's a pretty cool simple feature.

I do like the concept of this photo, love the colors and especially the orange flower. But when I first looked at it it looked like the basket and baby were added in afterwards- the angle seemed really weird to me. I would really like to see this shot taken from a different angle with a tighter crop. I think you have a good basis for a photo, and with a bit more focus, it have potential!
