Default *Selective Color

This is a photo that I took of my daughter playing in the sand. I am wondering if the selective color works with this photo. Comment and critiques are definitely welcomed. I am still fairly new to photography so any help that I can get it greatly appreciated.
Just want to add that one thing I feel like doesn't work as well with this shot it that the photo is kind of cut off at the bottom.

EXIF info:
Model: Nikon D5000
Aperature: F3.5
Exposure Time: 1/1000s
Focal Length: 18.0mm

Before getting into the coloring of this image, here's what I'm thinking about the composition. There's this empty space to the left that isn't serving any purpose. If she was looking that way, then having the space there could add to the image because the viewer would be drawn into that area to see if there's something there. I could see this working better as either a square crop with her to the left edge, or even as a vertical, although you'd be cutting away a lot of data.

The other compositional thing that gets me is, you can't see any bit of her face. Even the corner of an eye and a nose would point me to a spot in the image and add some direction and interest, although you do have her hands and feet pointing, so that somewhat makes up for it.

Now, as far as the coloring goes, I don't feel like this works here. The black and white is dark with thick strong contrast. I feel a very serious mood from the image. Then, I get this burst of soft bright color that seems terribly out of place relative to the harsh darkness of the rest of the image.

I think the idea has potential, but could use a few tweaks to really bring it around.

What Boomer said. The idea has potential. Work on it and let us see it.
