Default Anticipating the shot- Focus question

I took this yesterday while hanging out with my hubby and the boys. I was trying to "anticipate the shot," but I found my focus was soft because of it.

In this shot I focused on my hubby's face hoping that's where my son would end up. If I tried focusing on the empty space (before my son was there), they were both completely out of focus. So a couple questions.

1) Should I just have focused on my hubby's eyes since he wasn't moving much?
2) Would it have helped if I closed my aperture some?

Any other critique you have would be great too

Efix data:
Focal length: 50mm
Aperture f/1.8
ISO: 100
Shutter Speed: 1/100
Flash: Not used

Hi there,

Did you do any post processing on this? Cause really, the soft focus can easily be fixed by way of sharpening in post processing.

Also, because your aperture of f/1.8 is so small (number wise), it's tricky to focus on one subject, much more 2 subjects as your focus range is so small. Widen it up a little bit more especially the shot is by a window and you can go higher up to f/4 or f/5 even if you have to compensate on using higher ISO so that you can get both of them in focus.

Remember that if you have more than one person/subject in your shot, you will need to use a higher f stop to get a wider depth of field.

The image is a bit cold for my taste. It might be interesting to warm it up in post.
