should this be more in focus?

Newbie here, is this picture slightly out of focus? how is my lighting? what would have made this picture better? should I not have cut dad out?

Hi!

Well from a relatively inexperience photographer, so take this with a grain of salt

I think it is a nice capture however I would either zoom in more on the child and leave out the Dad from the T-Shirt neck upwards or zoom-out more and include the Dad. If you take the Dad out, I would go for a landscape crop.

Otherwise I think that the separation from the background is nice!

It's a shame the sun is coming from the left If it came from the right you would have gotten a little more highlight and shadow contrasts on the child's face.
