The crop is much better but still not great. in the original it seemed the point of your picture was to highlight a very unimpressive pole. Ask yourself, while looking at either of your images here, what is was that caught your attention. Something sparked in your head when you saw this musician and made you want to photograph him. He was what made you pull up your camera and fire away but you failed to make him the focus of your image. Get up close and personal with him. Drop a dollar or a euro in his case and then politely smile or ask for a photo. You will get a more personal feeling portrait out of him. Do not be afraid to get in someones face. If you are unsure of your willingness to try that at least get in front of the person with a zoom lens and try to get his face in there and show something. Aside from that the image seems a bit gray overall. Try adjusting some of your camera settings. Aperture priority should be your friend along with single point focus. Keep trying, if you want it you will get it.
