Default B&W conversion?

How is my black and white conversion? Is it too dark? General critique is welcome as well...I know my subject is dead in the centre but I croped it that way for this shot...

B&W

Camera Nikon D90
Exposure 0.005 sec (1/200)
Aperture f/3.5
Focal Length 50 mm
ISO Speed 200

Lovely shot Julia - she's a real sweetie. I would have liked to see a bit more negative space in the direction she's looking, but you have accounted for that. I think your contrast and vignetting is fine, but it's a little thing that makes a slightly bigger impact that distracts me and that is the lower fence frame board running through her head. Otherwise it's a lovely candid portrait.

On the whole, i agree. Maybe you could do some local dodging on the shows in the horizontal fence board. I also think the face and hands and mellon need just a touch more contrast...( or clarity ) but only a tiny amount.

i would crop the right portion and the bottom part to have more negative space at the left where she is looking and clone out the remaining knee and adjust with levels for more pop.

Thanks guys, now that you mentinoned it, the fence board running through her head is ALL i see , when I look at the picture! I could recrop it and get more negative space towards the side she's looking at, but for right now thats not what I want

This is absolutely beautiful. I agree about how it could be better with more negative space in the direction she's looking, but it works with this crop as well IMO.

And same here, I didn't notice the fence board until someone mentioned it!

I apologise for putting the pole through her head in your head, Julia

But, it stood out me I'm afraid.

p.s. You could try brushing with the blur tool - or make a gaussioan blur layer and brushing back in what you don't want blurred.

hehe, well I tried to blur out the fence in photoshop...but to make the pole less of the disctruction, I had to blur to the point where it just didnt look natural to me...so I just left it..lesson learned for next time tho
