Default Baby Boy Critiques Please

This was shot indoors with limited window light and a speedlight the was bounced off of the walls. How is the lighting? I am trying to improve my low-light photography without investing in a faster lens. I really wanted his eyes to POP! Is the dark lower part too distracting? Any other comments or ctitiques are welcome!!!

I am by no means an expert or even an amateur...He is B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L and you accomplished haviing his eyes pop! I really don't find the dark space distracting! I don't think my eyes even go there, I'm stuck on those big green eyes :-) I don't like the pillow around his head but again I'm stuck on the eyes! Very nice.

Thanks for your comments!!! I am glad that you feel I have made the eyes pop. And you are right he is beautiful so I really didn't have to do much work to make this a good shot. I have been working with posing him and I seem to struggle with making it look natural so the blanket behind his head probably is more distracting than it should be. Thanks!!!!

The shadow under his chin is distracting. There's really too much reflection in his eyes to pop. This is a case where you want to preview your image and then make adjustments accordingly.

Overall its a lovely photo and a beautiful baby! I've been working towards quality photos in low lighting esp indoors (as well as natural lighting) with minimal equipment as well. The exposure is nice but I think you have the same problem I too have is that using the flash focuses on one part of the face and not illuminating the whole evenly. His face (eyes, nose mouth) is light differently than the surrounding part of his head which takes away a little from the photo a little... perhaps I just notice that because I too have the same issue with my photos and I'm not sure yet how to best overcome this. I want to try not relying on flash fill as much but using more reflectors because my problem is from using my popup flash even though I have a diffuser on it. You achieved the eye pop but I agree with the above comment that perhaps it is a little to intense of a reflection there. did you touch the eyes up at all? One thing I found distracting is that is appears the white balance is off a bit. You may also want to try cropping the photo from landscape to portrait to see if you like it better with out the fluffy blanky to help focus even more on babes sweet features.

Thanks for your ctitiques!! I understand what you guys mean about to much reflection in the eyes. Next time I will try to aim my flash so it only produces one area of highlights in his eyes with the rest his beautiful eyes. I didn't really do much to eyes other than bringing out the green just slightly (they were already really green)
