Default A Schoolboy- Eyes full of Innocence

Hello, everybody. This is my first post...

This is an unprocessed portrait, so my question is: what are the usual processing steps
(in Photoshop, for example) in order to make a portrait look better? I'm new to this
aspect in photography, and I tend to keep my photos as natural as possible. But what
could be changed?
And what editing software is better for processing portraits? Photoshop, Lightroom?..

Do you have any other observations on this photo, besides processing?
Thanks. Ioana (from Romania).

Hi Loana,
please provide EXIF data so we can help you better.
I like the sharpness and the catchlights in his eyes, it's beautiful.
the only thing that really bothers me is the composition. either include both shoulders in the picture or crop them both.. the way it's cropped now just feels awkward.

Hi Loana & Welcome to DPS

I do all my 'clean processing' in LR. LR is like Marmite, you will love it or hate it. I couldn't be without it.

Here I do things like adjusting the WB, the exposure (spot on in your image), adjust the tone curve etc, etc. Scott Kelby has a great series of books to get you up and running on how to process in the platform of your choice - just look him up on Amazon when you decide on the best program for you.

The other tip I would give you is to look up the ROT to help with composition.

As Mr Jones says, if you post your EXIF data, we may be able to help further

Default Exif :)

Hello and thank you for the comments!

Regarding the composition, I wanted to 'catch' the shelves behind the boy,
and also to follow the rule of the thirds (so the boy wouldn't be placed exactly in the centre).

I forgot to post the exif information sorry. Here it is>
- Cano EOS 500D, f/4, 1/80s, ISO 400, 55 mm (no flash).

Thank you very much for mentioning LR- I'll try to find more about it

Regards, dear Mr Jones and NicolaB!

In this case, maybe a landscape orientation would have served you better. Cute boy!
