Default Portrait + Texture

I was inspired by this work
Portrait of a Young Man

but i thing mine is not as good.
maybe because mine doesn't have a monothone backgroud like the first work?
maybe because my model's face is not enough highlighted?

Yours has a couple of differences that make it not as good as the original. Like you state the background is important to the original and yours should be of similar colors to approximate the intent of the original. Also, your framing is too large. See how much of the shoulders you have included. Too much and your model should be in a black shirt to make the effect more believable. Or even a earth tone color. Although with the proper background I suppose you could use a different color. I think they call this a Renaissance style.

The darker background looks better, but of course it could look a lot better if you took your time. I also agree that a tighter crop would look better.
