Default Friends picture

My friends asked me to do photoshoot for them and I am not contended if I did the right thing on the composition, is it properly exposed? Is it sharp enough? How is the tone of their skin? Feed backs will be greatly appreciated.

Exposure 0.013 sec (1/80)
Aperture f/5.6
Focal Length 57 mm

The statue is coming out of her head. I would have dropped to a lower angle and moved slightly left to get their heads clear of the background distractions. Otherwise, the photo looks good to me. Nice exposure and sharpness.

I also have a Canon, I'm surprised at f5.6, the background is that sharp and the DOF is that deep, in focus that far back. The base of the fountain to the left looks"off", maybe over processed or light reflection on a smooth surface? I would be tempted to turn this into a vertical shot myself by cropping. Did you use a reflector? If you did, nice job on the subject lighting, very nice. TFS

Spookie I did little post processing for the background, just tweaking contrast and colour, yes, I used reflector and the sun was shining behind them on their left side.

I agree with Rentham. Statue soming out of head. Try to think to your self head in a clean spot when shooting.

Regarding DOF is more indepth than just what Aperture your using. DOF is affected by

Aperture
Focal Length - Wider = greater DOF Longer = Shallower DOF
Camera to Subject Distance
Also to some degree how close your subject is to your background also.

Thanks Rick, been super busy this last week or two and wanted to touch base on some posts I had made. I almost always forget length also affects DOF. Thanks for reminding me. I'm still in the stage of going thru some lenses to see where they shins and what I can and can't do with them, especially the ones I don't use much. Thanks for the answer AngeloDefender, I was wondering if you had bounced the light. BTW, they look like a lovely couple.TFS

I'm not sure the "statue coming out her head" thing is important here. You have two things working in your favor: the angle of the sun acts as a "hairlight," separating your subjects from the statue. Also, the DOF works here by keeping the subjects in focus while the statue is out of focus. The "coming out of her head" thing would be more relevant if it actually looked like it was coming out of her head, which it does not (to me) in this case, for the aforementioned reasons.

What is more relevant to me is that the statue is leaning to the left in the background. I rotated the picture 1.79 degrees clockwise, and it looks much better -- but could probably be rotated a bit more. The subjects look just as natural to me as in the original.

Also, the photo looks a bit underexposed by about 1/3 to 2/3 stops. This can be fixed. Also, because you've got light from the sun reflecting into the lens, both directly and indirectly from parts of the fountain, it appears you've lost a bit of contrast. Making the blacks more black seems to help.

EDIT: Oh, and I think the reflector might have been a bit too low. Notice that both have nose shadows going up. Nose shadows going down are my preference.

It seems to me that her face is overexposed or maybe just to much contrast to his? Also, the stripes on her blouse distracts me.
I like composition though
