Are the men in the background or the colour of the umbrella too distracting? Or would it do better with a tighter crop?

yes i think the two men are distracting. the face is too red. maybe you can tone down the redness of his face and about the umbrella, this can be cropped. the 2 men can be removed but will take some time to do this.

How would this look black and white though? I think if you converted it to B&W it would be a fantastic shot

Great job with cropping out the two men! Here is the B&W version. I personally like it more in colour, but it's just my opinion
