This is my first portrait. Please let me know what are the ways to improve the shot.

Now that I know that, I can tell you the background is distracting, and if you were to have shot with a smaller aperture (which in your lenses case is f/5.6) you could have blurred, defocused, or bokehed the background some and made it less distracting.

Focus & white balance seem pretty good. I would not have had her centered in the frame, and would probably crop the image on the left just behind her ear.
