Composition needs work. Way too much space around them, fill the frame with the little people. Color needs work. They have a magenta cast to their skin tones. Subjects are perfect though! Camera guy not so much...

Looks like your WB is set wrong. But, I can't tell because you didn't post your EXIF data from the photograph.

If you click on the "This photo was taken on January 19, 2011 using a Nikon D90." link on the flickr page that has your photo on it the whole magilla will show up and you can copy and paste the relevant parts.

Looks like your camera got fooled by the high noon sun. Get them into the open shade at that time of the day. Makes for better light and a cooler camera guy!

Hmm, well the problem is just how bright the sky is compared to the kids. Without a reflector or fill flash, you'll have a difficult time getting a good exposure for both. Did you happen to shoot in RAW? If so, try pulling down the exposure a bit, adjusting your White Balance, and adding some fill light and recovery. You might be able to reel in some of the blown highlights that way.

Another thing you might want to try is to use aperture priority mode and widen your aperture quite a bit (~3.5 maybe) to isolate them from the background. f/10 is good for landscapes, not so good for portraits typically.

If you don't mind, I've added a quick edit with some color balance and lighting corrections as an example. I'll gladly remove it if you'd like.

Oh, and be aware of your backgrounds, she has a tree growing out of the top of her head.
