Does this look like it would be good pictures for a Photo Contest? The subject is Portraits and they tend to focus on lighting a lot?

The light actually looks pretty - but it's hard to tell, because the photo is very underexposed and the conversion is a bit muddy. Do you have a SOOC you could post?

And, also, your EXIF, per the critique forum rules.

SOOC = Straight Out Of Camera, no editing done.

like Susan said, it's underexposed but it does have potential.
I've edited it a bit, trying to fix it.. naturally it would have been better with SOC image but here we go:
(if it's a problem, let me know and I will take it down in a second!)

It looks better then mine. I'm going to try to do something more with it a little later when I have my other computer. I honestly didn't really like the picture and then my aunt (who is a photographer) told me it was a really good shot and that she liked it a lot. So I'm going to see if I can mae some changes to it. Thanks for the advise!!

This looks great... can you please explain what steps you took?

sure.. it's quite simple actually.
just added a layer for brightness and contrast and bumped both of them way up.
then just used the dodge (brighten) brush to brighten up the eyes.
that's all

btw, for B&W photos I usually bump the contrast all the way and start backing up slowly until I get the desired effect. this way you'll get actual blacks and whites in your photo instead of a gray picture.

Okay, so I found the original pic and edited a little different although it still looks the same to me. What do you think?
