Default Mom & Daughter

What do you guys think of the general composition here and lighting? Specifically, when do you use fill flash?

PS I kept DoF shallow purposely to downplay the background (our street) - so I know location can be improved! Thanks!

i like it.

nice backdrop and good focus points.

i like the skin tones, very natural looking, pretty girls too.

the composition is nice, not sure the fill flash would have improved this too much, especially as it would have slowed your shutter speed, perhaps a reflector of some sort in this light.

Yeah, thought I was lucking out with the late day light and guess I did...and I'm even luckier to have these two pretty models living with me. Thanks for the feedback! -kb

The lighting is fine - you've got some nice, subtle shadowing. The shallow DOF works well (LOVE the bokeh from the 50mm f/1.4 - I'm guessing that's the lens you used?)

It is, however cropped way too tight for me. I'd have taken a few steps back. With the mom's head, shoulders and arm being chopped and in the lower corner, and the baby's face being up so high and being chopped off at the waist, it seems unbalanced and too much space in between them. If there was some more space around them, it would have balanced the composition a lot better.

It looks like the focus fell on mom's hair, right above her shoulder. That's the sharpest part of the image. Both of their faces are soft.

Lovely moment though, it made me smile.

Yes, this was shot with a 50mm 1.4, among the first shots taken...love it!

I definitely should have a taken a step back, this is the full image, no cropping. My other shots just before were more traditional of them, so when I instructed her to lift Emily, I stayed in the same spot...so my bad! Looking at it again, definitely too much "negative" space in the dead center between them.

Thanks Susan! - kb
