Question B&W Portrait

Hi there - first post to the forum! I'm looking for some feedback on this black and white portrait that I took. What do you think of the framing, lighting, and focus? Any help is greatly appreciated!



Camera Nikon D3100
Exposure 0.017 sec (1/60)
Aperture f/3.5
Focal Length 18 mm
ISO Speed 450
Exposure Bias 0 EV
Flash Auto, Fired, Return detected

Why did you cut off one side of his face like that? Was it on purpose, or just being careless?

There are problems with all three.

Framing: I've seen pictures that are half of the face but they are obviously intentional. This looks very much like a mistake.

Lighting: Harsh, direct flash (on camera?) with a ghastly side shadow.

Focus: His near eye looks out of focus, but I can't tell for sure. When shooting so shallow that you can only get one eye in focus, opt for the one closest to the camera.
