Hello, when I crop I try and think what it is adding to the photo. If you think the tent is adding anything leave it. If not get rid of it. One thing I would have changed is trying to find a different background to shoot against. If you moved maybe it would be possible to get a better background? It is a good shot but the tent and bricks make it seem kind of gloomy and dark.

I think the problem with the picture (to be super critical) is that its pretty uninspiring. Its not anything you've done wrong with the pic exactly, but the way you approached it to begin with (IMO). I think you needed to be a little more creative with your positioning when taking the shot, as this is just a shot taken by someone in a crowd, and therefore looks like a snap shot (albeit a nice one) I'm not going to profess to being an expert in this field, and understand that posting my own image as an example may lead to people being critical of my own work lol, but here it goes: With this shot I got as close to the stage as possible and sat on the floor, so that the angle was more interesting, and by tilting the camera slightly it added an extra point of interest to the pic. Now i'm not saying its an amazing pic, but hopefully an example of how my thought process worked in order to capture the image in a slightly different way, and how it was important that I moved out of the crowd and positioned myself somewhere where I could try something a little more interesting.

I completely get what you're saying, and you're right. I love that shot and it does tell/speak more of an interesting shot than a "normal crowd shot" Thanks for this tip I need to remember, I am actually shooting the same guys at their first official gig in a few weeks |

No problem
![]() I think its all about being brave and actually getting to the front of the stage and not worrying about what other people think. I took a friend with me to this gig, as I felt a bit self concious about shooting them as it was a small venue and wasn't sure what people might think (maybe you could do the same?)... I know that sounds paranoid, but I was just feeling a bit scared for some reason. Anyway after about 5 minutes of shooting the band I totally forgot about my friend being there (he was also shooting them from the other side), the crowd behind and next to me, and just got in to the swing of things, and before long was sitting and lying on the floor to get creative shots. Everyone just presumed I was from a local paper/magazine, or had been hired by the band to take the shots and let me get on with it. I think the band were a bit confussed though as they had no idea who I was, as I was actually there to shoot one of my friends band who were on next, and I was using this band as a practice run. They came up to me after they'd finished and started asking who I was and what were the pics for (I think they were hoping I was from a major magazine or something), so i just explained, got their details and sent them the pics. They actually asked me to shoot another gig a few weeks later, but I politely refused as wasn't sure my ear drums could take another bashing of seriously heavy metal lol! |
