Default Use of a fill flash?

I took this shot trying to put the height of the trees in perspective and i'm happy with the composition. My concern is my son's face is covered too much by shadow. I'm think that a fill flash may have worked here, but as I was pretty close to him, would that have washed out his face?

Definitely fill flash, and probably on its lowest setting (if it was manual)

Even on your camera, I would have gone -2 on it... Love the concept though

Judging by the small amount of light I see on wisp of hair at 8:00, I would say the sun was almost directly behind his head?

If this is the case, you might have been able to bounce some light into his face.

I carry one of those flexible "white" cutting boards. They are almost paper thin, plastic and bright white. They roll up easy, or if you trim them a little, they can be the size of a laptop.

I would be guessing, but if you were laying on your back to take this shot...you could have placed the reflector on your lower chest to get the bounce...

Example of Cutting Board Here

Yes. This is a classic case of a bright sky and shadows not playing nicely on a digital camera sensor.
