If its a crop, you cut off the top part of his head Did you cut it off for the sun flare off his hair?

no, that's actually the full frame. i really like the look of having a portion of a person's head or face cropped out on close up shots, so this shot just continued the trend. thanks for the feedback though.

I would say if you crop his head, I would crop the neck as much too... cause you get all neck, but only half the forehead... but it just looks unbalanced to my eye at this moment.

I still like the capture a lot though

I don't know what you use for editing, but an exposure/brightness brush might be nice for his eyes to brighten them up a little.
