Talking Learning the ropes....

From misc

This was from a recent senior shoot, and was what I considered the best of the bunch. Was my first time shooting the whole set on manual. Want to know how I can improve the lighting, pose and overall feel of the print...p.s. I don't know how to use pp software yet

Model: NIKON D90
ISO: 200
Exposure: 1/1000 sec
Aperture: 5.6
Focal Length: 105mm
Flash Used: No

Hi there. Pop your exif data up too, it will help with cc

If this is sooc, then you have done a great job with the exposure. There is such a lot to think about when you go manual isn't there?

The biggest learning point here is the use of the wall. The wall leads you out of the image instead of into your senior. You need the leading lines of the wall to lead into her.

Have you cropped this? If not, then you will need to leave space around her for cropping to allow for different print sizes.

The light is nice if a little harsh (what time was it - the sun looks quite bright still?), you have catchlights and a good connection with the camera. In my opinion, the pose is good.

Nice job.

Next time, have her leaning towards the camera a bit more. Everything below her shoulder looks much bigger than her head. And don't forget to pull the hair away from her eyes

Thank you....I will pay closer attention to the lines next time. I am going to have to train my eyes for that! BTW - not sure what SOOC is. The picture has been cropped, so I am going to go back to it and see if I can crop it the other way. The picture was taken at about 6 in the afternoon when the sun was setting in that area & it was very bright, took this shot from about 4 different angles before I caught this one. It was by far the best of the bunch. It was also very windy so we got lucky that her hair wasn't more in her eyes.

Default is this what you mean by leading lines?

From Miscellaneous

@NicolaB....when you mention the leading lines...is this more along what you are trying to tell me....that the more brick in front leads the eyes to my subject better? I didn't like this one because of the shadows on her face.

Hi

SOOC is straight out of camera.

Yes, this is more what I was meaning. Here is a link to a very talented photographer. Hopefully this will take you straight to the wall photograph......

Lisa Lucky (nope it doesn't, but it is in that set - the little boy against the white wall)

I am sure there are tutorials on here too. I just can't find them by searching at the moment and they don't come up in the Google search. You may have more luck.

very cool pictures and I do see the difference in the lines when I saw the picture you mention. thanks very much.

almost all of my pictures are SOOC...they may have been cropped, but that is all that I know how to do at this point in time. So thanks for the compliment! :-)
