Default A son & his mummy

No sure what happened to my last post of this pic? It seems that my thread has just completely vanished?

Oh well, here it is again...

I am new to studio work, and recently purchased some cheap equipment to practice with and gain some experience. This was my 2nd attempt at using it.

Please can I get some feedback on how well the lighting works and what I could have done differently if I have made any mistakes.

Also some general feedback on the pic would be great.

This is a good attempt. You have to give us more details on where you positioned the lights though, what type of modifier you used, and your camera settings.

Sorry I forgot the Exif data:

Camera Canon EOS 450D
Exposure 0.005 sec (1/200)
Aperture f/5.6
ISO Speed 100
Lens EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS

The lights were positioned more or less straight on from the front, I had a silver umbrella to the right of me which I bounced the flash off, and a soft box to the left, and used wireless triggers.

I positioned them straight on to get an even light, as didnt want one half of the face to be cast in shadow, and wanted crisp, clean images.

Not sure if that was the best set up though?

I am a complete newbie and know nothing about lighting, but I will tell you what my eye sees and finds uneven: the background lightning. To the left of the boy, they background looks gray, and in the rest of the image, it looks white. I think it would look much better if the complete background looked white or both sides looked gray with the white in the middle.

I really like the image, the moment is precious.

Hi,

Yes that's a good point about the background... I think its caused by shadow, as I was working in a small area and couldn't really move the subjects far enough away from the backdrop. I will see if maybe positioning the softbox a little differently will give a more even tone next time.

Thank you for your feedback
