Default Grandma's Love

First post here. I took this picture at my sister-in-law's music recital. I feel really good about this photo, but wanted to see if there was anything that I could have done when taking it to make it better or anything that can be done now to make it better. Thanks for any feedback!

Camera: Nikon D7000
Lense: AF-S DX Nikkor 35mm f/1.8 G
F-stop: f/1.8
Esposure time: 1/200 sec
ISO: 180
Focal length 35mm

It's a wonderfully precious moment.... couple things come to mind.

1. People in the background are distracting. It would be nice if you had a clear background.
2. DOF. You needed to stop down from 1.8 Grandma is not in focus, and she is one of the subjects. When shooting that close wide open, remember you only have a few inches of area in focus.

Thanks Scott for the suggestions. I am starting to learn that with f/1.8, though it allows in a lot more light, it is difficult to use because of the DOF. I was talking pictures of family groups at a get together recently and was using f/1.8 to allow as much light in as I could. But not everyone was in focus, it was really a hard shot (for me) with so little light. I'm thinking I need to invest in a flash for those kind of situations. Thanks again on the comments!
