Cool First photo shoot with my Canon

So I had just gotten my first DSLR (Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS) and I asked my friend to take some pictures. Model. :P Well the look I was trying to go for was kinda... Sad. Lonely.

I would just like feedback. Nothing in particular what I'm wondering about this photo. Just any comments you have.

I really like this photo! There is a nice light falling on her shoulders.

can you post your exif data?
as it appears the camera did exposure calculation for the whole photo, trying not to overexpose any parts of the image. trying so hard not to overexpose - the camera actually underexposed your model.
I think if you exposed it better it would have made a great photo

I used an 18-55mm lens with my Canon Rebel. Anything else, I'm not too sure of. I took the picture awhile back. But I just recently found this shot. And I have a question for you. When you say if I exposed the model more, what do you mean by that? If it was her entire body? Or if there was more lighting? What?
Thank you though for the feedback.

Your camera got confused by the sky and tried to expose the shot for that. Hence, she is underexposed by a stop or two. She also has a purple cast to her skin tones, not good. Indicates that your white balance was not set correctly. Now if you meant to do these things to your photograph then well done.

I'm talking about camera settings and lightning.
you have a semi-pro tool in your hands, while you can treat it like a point & shoot camera (which is ok..), you can actually learn more about it and take the next step in photography.
I suggest you take the time and learn about apertures, shutter speeds, ISO and metering and how it all connects together to help you get better and better.

you can start right here: Exposure (1) A balancing act

Yeah, subject is defiitely underexposed, but as MrJ says, you need to start a bit with understanding at least what the basic words mean so that any suggestions we give mean something to you and it'll help you think about your images more.

It has a lot going for it that a bit of understanding of exposure and light could have made great. Seems like you have a decent eye for this so far.. now start working on some of the basics to pull the most out of your images.

Thumbs up

Thank you to everyone who commented. I'm just starting with everything at the moment. Learning about the camera and learning what words mean what. If I only I thought I'd be into photography during photo journalism class!!!
