Thumbs up Photo Shoot

I did a photo shoot with my girlfriend today and was pretty pleased with the shots.

It was really bright out so I decided to go in the shade and practice with some fill flash.

I was wondering if you can give me some advice on how to make them even better. Everytime I make one of these threads, I learn so much and I'm just looking to learn even more.

So...how is the composition, exposure/lighting, poses, etc.

From my non-pro opinion, the first thing that hits me is her attire which seems totally incongruent with the scene - even just a pair of hiking boots could have done it. Also it seems to be in need of more contrast - or blacken the blacks some more. The pose looks somewhat contrived but this is something I too would find hard to get right. She looks lovely and hopefully she'll keep modelling for you.

Hi Tyler, I hope you don't mind that I grabbed your gf photo and have quick PP on it, just to give you an idea how you can improve this picture, I added lens flare, blackened some areas to pop out some colors, dodge some to brighten just to compliment the flare. If you can smoothen your Gf skin tone will be much better (again this is not a perfect PP, just to illustrate and give some ideas to improve...I hope so)

Totally agree with you there! makes me wonder how she ended up at such a place in those heels, must of been a taugh hike, unless she changed at the scene..a pair of unlaced hiking boots would look just as good if not even hotter haha just my opinion

not to mention (but I am, lol) that she's standing with her toes pointed toward each other (pigeon-toed)! Re: the photoshopped image... can't say I like the flare but the coloring is much better

Thumbs up

Hi Tyler,
I noticed you listed a 50mm as the lens used. I love my 50 too. I would have tried to tighten the shot (get a bit closer), not a bunch, maybe a step or two. As for the exposure, I agree that it needed more contrast. I'm assuming that you had just the on camera flash. I suggest that you use a diffuser on it, because that type of flash is very harsh, and anything you can do to soften it a bit helps, and would have added that little bit of contrast you needed. I think it's a pretty good shot overall.

My first reaction was "nice shot!" I actually quite like this pose and the angle of her feet. Maybe next time she could try dropping her left shoulder just a bit?

Like others said, there's not much to connect her outfit to the scene. If her heels had a more casual/"outdoors" look (like wedges) I think it would help.

The pigeon toes don't bother me as much as the splayed knees. Stand straight, arch the back, both hand on hips, turn the left shoulder more towards the camera. Really need off camera flash! At least a diffuser. Get closer. But don't cut off her feet or head. Also, even though these are cut off jeans the string hanging is not good. Jim
