Default Jack Sparrow wannabe

Instead of letting a rainy day get to him, my son decided to play Jack Sparrow for the afternoon. I played around with the flash coming from camera right. I noticed that the hair created a shadow on his chin. Is it that distracting? What about the slight shadow on the wall behind him? Yes, the background could be better, but we did the best we could given we were stuck inside all day. Thanks in advance for you critique.

Yes, the shadow from the hair is a little bit of a problem as it has 're-contoured' his face a little bit. Maybe a side profile angle would have been better (although more close-up than half body)?

The background is an issue, yes. Understandable that you were inside, but he needed to stand farther away from the wall to avoid the shadow.

He's a cutie, though! Tell him to get into character next time! I think he'd love seeing the photo of him acting out the character he plays

Thanks so much for taking the time to give your opinion. Some things to take into consideration the next time.

That's Captain Jack Sparrow.

Too funny! You would think after the many times my son has made me watch the movies that I would have that down!

Learn to bounce the flash in the small space so that the back wall receives enough light from other directions and the light hitting the model is far softer.

Thanks again for your advice. I'm assuming bouncing off of the ceiling would have been my best option?

I am still new to photography and have not used any lighting like this so all I will say is that I like the shadow around his chin area, it almost gives him a beard like Captain Jack!!

Seeing I'm his Mom, the shadow on his chin doesn't bother me either. It's the shadow on the wall that's bothering me. I stink with Photoshop, but I'm sure there is a way to tone that part down...I just need to learn how! Next time, I'll work to avoid the shadow all together.
