Default Winter Picture

I've been on a little hiatus over the winter, and I've missed you guys

Here's a picture of my son that I took. I was looking for some critic on it. How is his positioning in the picture? Should I have left an open field on his left side (camera right), or is it okay because he's looking back over his shoulder? How is my DOF? Should I have tried to bring the background more into focus to add more dimension to the picture? How could I have gotten more light into his eyes?

Anything else you can critic me on would be great!

For me, technical aspect is just fine, the only thing that I notice to improve is the framing of your subject, you cropped some part of his head and it may be better if you include more of his lower body (i want to see where he is sitting or standing)

Thanks. It is a tight crop. My mother in law was holding him and she wasn't paying attention while I took the picture, so she didn't photograph well lol. I'm going to try to find the picture sooc to compare

Okay apparently I didn't crop this picture. That's how close I took it lol. I guess I just need to zoom out a bit.

I would have left a bit more room on the camera right side, he feels a little crammed into the frame for me. Cropping the top of his head doesn't bother me at all. I do it myself on occasion. You could have either used a light or reflector to liven up his eyes. Not always an option, I know, especially with kids. Both his eyes have some catch lights so I bet you could bring them up in post quite a bit.

I also don't mind the tight crop. In regards to the open field, I would have put more open space on the camera right side. In this situation (where someone was holding him on that side) I may have tried a portrait style shot. I'd also try lighting up his eyes. Here is a quick tutorial on how to do that, if you'd like to try.
