Default Connor in Bluebonnets

I am trying to use fill flash in outdoor photography. Did I use it right or is this picture too bright?

Nikon D90
ISO 600
Aperture F1.8
Focal length 35mm
Flash -1.7

Not too bright in my opinion, but there are definitely blown out areas on his shirt. I do not think that they are a problem though, not distracting to me.

You do have some focus issues though. His shirt is sharp and his eyes are not.

You ought to post your exif before Windrider comes and yells at ya!
But seriously, it does help.
With no exif I do not know whether the focus problem was caused by too shallow an aperture or just an issue of AF hitting the wrong spot.
We can offer much better advice when you have read and followed the rules.

Overall, I think the photo has a blue cast. The whole thing feels very cold to me.

Hi,

I am not an expert but I agree about the blue tone, perhaps if the boy had worn something different, it would have helped?
I think you captured the background really well though.

I agree the focus landed on his shirt and the white balance is off. need to warm at least his skin tones up.

Thank you for your comments. I see that I did focus on the wrong thing. I should've focused on his eyes and locked it before moving the camera. It could've been the aperture issue too. We'll try again. I'll also try to fix this a little in LR3. Maybe I can do something to fix all the blue. Thanks everyone!

Okay, I'm attempting to warm it up and I tried to sharpen the eyes a little better in LR3.

Yeah, f/1.8 is a bit wide.
Not usually a problem, but if you focus and then recompose it's very easy for the subject to fall out of your area of focus.

I like the second better, it does a bit for the eyes. I would say that it's a tad magenta now though.

I took a bad picture yesterday, but thanks to a critique I got on this picture, I knew what I did wrong! One part of the picture was sharp and another part was a little blurry. I just thought I would post that. I plan to post more pictures for critique soon. Thanks!
