Default Myrtle Beach frolic

Daughter playing at Myrtle Beach in the sand.
Cloudy day.

canon t1i
47mm
1/400
f/14

What do you think about composition, color, etc?
The color just doesnt "pop" like some pictures.
Already straightened it and made slight adjustments. Some clouds but really bad light coming from the right side of the frame.

I like the concept and that you are trying to tell a story.

I'm not 100% sure it works fully though, as for me she seems too far away from the sea, so there's not enough "interest" in the picture.

if she was just about to splash in to the water it would have been really good I think, but as you can't see her facial expression there's not much "feeling" to it without that IMO.

Maybe converting to B&W might help it have more "impact"?

It's more of a snapshot, but there's nothing wrong with that. It's a cool moment. I think it would have been interesting to go real wide angle and shoot from the ground up. If you had lights handy, maybe use those to bring the background down a few stops. Colors look a bit flat, so you may need to bump the contrast some more.

+1 on getting low. I think if you took the shot just a foot lower - it would have been a lot more interesting.

I'll try to think of that next time. It was a very spontaneous thing. She jumped off the bank a few times... and then that was it. I didn't have a lot of time and once she finds out you're taking her picture she tends to clown around for the camera. I usually try to get lower with kids, because most people forget they are so short, and you tend to see a lot of the tops of heads.
Thanks for the comments.

I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss the image actually, the colour, contrast etc is easily remedied in PP (levels and a little bump in vibrance), and it has a sort of anonymous appeal because of it being from the back and in a unique position..

..is this a crop from an original? Only reason I ask is that the biggest detractor for me is the composition and framing. I don't mind the shot height, nor her relative position to the environment, but I feel like that if this were a landscape orientation, with her in the right third, and given a good B&W conversion, it would be absolute dynamite... like, 20x30-on-the-wall type shot.

No that's it, actually it was a little wider but the horizon was crooked, so when I straightened it, I had to crop tighter . I'm going back for a day next weekend. I might try a reshoot. The landscape thing sounds great! I like the anonymity of the back view. After all, it's my kid, I know who she is. I played with contrast and color and I'm a little happier.
