Default Does this okay in b/w and does the bokeh bother you?

I like this pic i snapped of my 3 year old, but he was a tad underexposed relative to the bright background. i took this shot at fixing it....

Ben bw

any thoughts? did it work? do i need to retake?

exif data:
nikon d5000
focal length 48 mm
aperture 4.5
shutter speed 1/160
iso 400

thanks!

Maybe could use a tad more contrast. Not much I think.

The bokeh is beautiful. So is your 3-year-old.

What a cutie! The bokeh is lovely, but the conversion is really flat and muddy. I'd be curious to see a SOOC if you have one, Kristen.

SOOC = Straight Out Of Camera (no editing).

Thank you very much Susan!

btw, the boy looks nice. I too am in favor of a bit more contrast. Bokeh is fine to my eyes.

Since I often shoot portraits with a 85 f/1.2 lens, I'll call that 'bokeh' hash and slightly intrusive.

Ah, Susan, was afraid you'd say that. here's the sooc (its a jpeg of the raw file, not the jpeg from the camera, if that makes sense):

DSC_0118_2011-03-19_11-37

can you describe to me a bit more about why it looks flat and muddy, and if that is b/c of the original underexposure? thx in advance.

Yep, definitely underexposed. Mind if I play? The conversion you did is just a lot of shades of grey.
