Default Winter Walk

Hi – I am new around here & just learning how to use my camera. I have found critiques of other photos really helpful so I thought I would submit one of my own.

This is the son of a good friend of mine. It was the first time he let me take a photo of him.

I'll start by saying that I am a beginner too so take this for what its worth. The exposure looks close, maybe a tad underexposed and the focus looks good. The one thing that jumps out at me is the "icky" backround. The dirty snow and footprints detract from this shot IMO.

Thanks! It hadn't occured to me that the snow looked dirty. It actually isn't - it was a warm day and was just wet. I hadn't thought about how others who didn't know the context/conditions might view that. I think I will attempt a fix in PSE.

he is underexposed.
it's hard taking photos with snow as your background as it's very bright at sunlight.
try brightening it up and using the levels to fix the white balance.

It's underexposed because of the snow. When you take pictures with snow in them, the camera will underexpose because of the brightness of the snow. In addition to underexposing the subject, the snow also appears gray (as you see here). When shooting in snow either use manual mode or exposure compensation to tell the camera to overexpose the photo.
