Bonding time

Wasn't sure if this post fits in the people forum or the landscape/cityscape forum, I apologize in advance. I was taking a photo of a neighborhood dock, when a father and his daughters came into frame and took the opportunity to capture the moment. I was wondering if the composition is good and somewhat tells a story or creates a mood? How's my DOF and would it have been better if I shot it in color instead of monochrome? Thanks.

I'm usually a fan of b&w but in this case I think color would have been the way to go. The people being out of focus makes it seem as they just got in the way. I would have focused on them. Also, getting down lower would have given a better angle, adding a little more background on the top.
