Default Portrait at Grand Canyon

This is a portrait I took of my niece at the Grand Canyon...pretty basic. I see, of course, that sky is way too hot...but what else could I have done to make it better. I wanted the background to be more crisp.

Camera: NIKON D60
ISO: 100
Exposure: 1/200 sec
Aperture: 7.1
Focal Length: 18mm
Flash Used: Yes
Tripod: No

Try this link to a candid I snapped also...I always prefer candids to posed...what do you think?? http://picasaweb.google.com/11647321...02146660101730

it's a good portrait and I for one, like the blurry background.
if you wanted to get the background in focus, you should have used a higher aperture value.
how high? it depends on your distance from your niece.
using a higher aperture value will allow less light into your camera, which will mean you'll need to bump your ISO higher.
