Default Birthday Invite Picture

I would love your opinion of this shot. I sat my daughter in the window seat and tried to get a cute shot to put on the invite for her birthday party. I'm not very good with my 50 mm f/1.8, yet. I have a hard time with the manual focus, especially since she is a moving subject! I have to ship my camera out for repair tomorrow, so I want to be confident I have a keeper since I don't know how long I'll be without it and I need to get these invites made! Sorry for the long story. Your critique is greatly appreciated!

What a cutie I just feel that the shot would be better if the left side of her face was more in focus...I got myself a 50mm a week ago and having the same problem, with focusing...gotta learn how to use it still

Yeah, the focus is way off. The only part that appears to be slightly sharp is the front of her hair - the rest is really out of focus. She's a cutie, though.

I would go ahead and use the image for the party invites, since they are for your daughter's birthday and not for a client. I doubt that people who receive them are going to be looking too closely at the image with a critical eye, they'll be too busy thinking what a cutie she is! So I believe the image is passable.

I only have a comment on the 50mm 1.8. The focussing on it really stinks, albeit it takes rather nice shots for the money. But you're not alone. Many people have complained about the same thing.

Thanks. I tried to take a few more shots, but she was too interested in playing and I was still having a hard time with the manual focus. I'm glad to know it's not just me having issues with the lens. I don't seem to have as much trouble with manual focus on my other two lenses, so it's frustrating with this one! I will just use this one for invites and keep practicing with the lens (once my camera is repaired) in preparation to take her birthday portraits.

it's not that the focusing really stinks- it is that when you shoot wide open with this lens, you have a very narrow depth of field and it is hard to focus accurately. it takes a boatload of practice and it is especially hard with little ones of course b/c they keep moving. there are many factors that influence focus and i wouldn't necessarily blame the lens

op, agree with pps that its fuzzy, but she is very cute. if you've got any where she's turned a bit more to the light- those might be good- just b/c the right side of her face (my right) is a little shadowy. imo
