a certain amount of exposure latitude is in your interpretation of the scene...from just a technical perspective I think, as MrJones has said, "you nailed it".

Agreed with the others, the exposure looks spot-on. What a face on him!

Sorry, but the answer to this question is "No, this image is not properly exposed as the illustration below will prove." Do you see how the graph is pushed to the right so that some of it is cut off? Those would be your whites being clipped. That doesn't mean this isn't an amazing shot. I really like it, but I think that a bit of time in post to correct for exposure and crop it a bit tighter would make for a much stronger image.

A couple of blown highlights in the background, but the subject is properly exposed. The blown highlights don't bother me. I do agree that a tighter crop would serve this image well. Burning the background would even out the histogram as well.

I tend to agree with Susan on this one, the blown highlights don't take from the photo and the person is exposed perfectly in my opinion.
I do agree that technically the whole photo is not exposed correctly but that's ok in this one.
regarding the crop, I'm just not sure. I have a feeling that a tighter crop will just make it one of many others, much more ordinary shot.

The subject is somewhat backlit against the bright sky, and exposure in situations like this is always a compromise of getting the subject right at the expense of the background...the histogram is showing the bright sky. If he spot metered off the face, the end result would have been the same. Sorry Lee, can't agree with your assessment on this go round. But will agree that a tighter crop will improve this shot
