One of the great advantages of digital photography is that, once you get past the initial expense of equipment, you can take thousands of images without spending any more money. And that's exactly what you need to be doing right now. Shoot everything, in every kind of light, under all kinds of conditions; always looking for that combination that produces photographic 'magic.' Also, don't get married to shooting everything at eye level. What does the world look like when you are lying on the ground? Standing on a chair? Much closer than normal? Often the best photographs come from helping see things in a new way. And your best shots will come after many, many thousands of clicks of the shutter.

I think you need to read 2 books from this website

Discover Your Cameras Potential With DPS Resources

you seem to be missing a few technical points on how your camera sees light. It is a really important step to taking better pictures.

The portrait book will also help you pose subjects, balance skin tones and crop properly.

Read it with your camera in hand and practice each point as you read it so that you understand it.

It will make a massive difference to the images you produce.

thank you for the suggestion. I am checking into the books and in the mean time and reading some of the tutorials..found the triangle theory b Mr. Rowse particularly helpful.
