Thumbs up Little Neice

I recently upgraded to a Canon T1i and I'm looking into improving the composition of my portrait photography. Largely, I'm interested in what you have to say...what is the mood/feel you get, does the eyes and body posture play a role in the feeling, what is good about it and what do you think would make it better (in terms of composition)?

My Little Neice

The EXIF data is...
Camera: Canon EOS REBEL T1i
Color Space: RGB
Focal Length: 41
F number: 6.3
Exposure time: 1/40

Bring it on, this is a first for me so the more critique the better

What an adorable baby! It would be great if the eyes were a tad more in focus. The picture has an unintentional soft quality about it that I don't personally favor, but I love the composition. I think the only thing that really bothers me is the background. For portrait photography, I prefer a nice crisp background... meaning, no objects unnecessarily posing a distraction. You could have created a shallower depth of field to blur those objects in the background further, and the focus would be all on that beautiful little girl. Still, it's a very nice shot.

Is there any chance you could post your photo here for us? Its just sooooooooo much easier to view on one page than to flip back and forth. txs!

ya the eyes look soft and a tad on the darkish side. at least the one on the right does.

also agree that the background is a little distracting. my eyes keep wanting to go back and figure out what is going on back there and where you took the pictures and such.

keep the background clean to keep the focus on the portrait

great job otherwise cute kid

I think this picture would be better if lighting was equal on both sides of this beautiful babys face. Also, I agree that portrait photos shouldn't have many objects in the background or just one-color backgrounds unless nature is the background [ If that makes sense ] Also, if your camera seems to make images too soft try cleaning the lens, I've had this problem many times. This photo is great though! Keep it up!

These comments are on target. Sharper focus on the eyes and the face would help, as would a less distracting background. For some reason, I'm also a little disturbed by the part of the head that is cut out of the frame; it seems imbalanced to me. Just my two cents!
