Default Breakfast on mountain... Composition?

Hi all,

I've tried to convey the message of someone having breakfast during the sunrise... I came up with this.

Is it well composed? I cropped a bit to come up with this but I want to know how did the composition work.

EXIF:

Nikkor 14-24m f/2.8
17mm
1/125 @ f/16
ISO 200

Thanks.

I love it too, but I'm not sure if it falls under the right composition rules.

If someone were to tell you it doesn't follow the right composition rules, would you suddenly like it less?

No, but I will definately benifit from the composition tips to get similar shots more aligned to the pro ones (trying to be pro you know ).

I agree that often the best compositions are the ones that break a few rules, but you need to know what the rules are and why you are breaking them. This image is one that would have benefited from following the rules. I suspect that moving the camera a bit to put the horizon line closer to the bottom instead of letting it run across the center of the frame would have resulted in a significantly better composition. (Theoretically you could also move the horizon up but since most of the foreground is silhouetted, that wouldn't make much sense either.) There are cases where allowing an important compositional element run through the center of the frame makes sense, but they are very, very rare. Break that rule at your own peril.

i like it a lot. does make sense, as lee said, to move the horizon to the lower 1/3 line, esp if there was more interesting sky, and esp since the bottom 1/8 of the shot is all just darkness anyway.

i find it interesting that you mention the breakfast thing as the theme- to me, that wouldn't have come out without you saying it- and in fact i would have liked it better if she didn't have a bag over her shoulder and actually wasn't eating. would have been a simpler silhouette and very interesting with the beautiful sunrise and the mtn. imo.
