This is a picture of my daughter I took a few years back. Something is missing but I cannot figure out what it is. I would like to try and take the same pic only more recent so looking for tips on how to improve it.

I like it. I would have zoomed out a little bit more, though, to get her whole face into the photo... unless that is the kind of look you were going for - then well done! If I were really picky, I'd edit out the "fly away" hair on her nose and maybe do a soft color pop on the overall photo.

Great shot.

A little post processing. Removed a little dark and light, upped the saturation and added some unsharp mask.
Does that improve it for you?

My first time trying to attach an image! OK, I'll use photobucket, I hope that's OK.

Yes! She doesn't look as washed out. I put them side by side and the colours just pop more.

Thanks

- i like the pose and tight focus/lighting on the face
- what it needs is a good PP. work done: bring out the eyes (adjusted the midtone contrast), saturation, darken the distracting background, soften the skin, a bit of cross processing

Apparently we're all posting pictures that are a bit too big. Under 740 suggested.
For my part, sorry about that.

I use GIMP, because it's free
And I like to be different LOL.

Edited to add: Of course we all see something different unless our monitors are calibrated. I looked at this thread with my uncalibrated laptop and thought my version looked iffy, but on my reasonably calibrated monitor, looks OK.

Photoshop is great, but don't be afraid to learn and use some of the freebies out there: Picnik, Picasa, GIMP, Paint.net are just a few, and all will help you improve your shots.
