Default 2 part child picture question

Looking for a little input on the pictures I took of my friend's daughter. I am really happy with the finished picture but am curious to see if other's think it is good as well. Also want to know if there was something I could have done when taking the picture to make it 'pop' more like the processed image.Child/family photography is something I really enjoy doing and I want to improve my skills. Thanks in advance for any input!

EXIF:
Canon 7D
18-135mm EFS Canon lens
f/5.6
1/200
ISO 640
35mm focal length

There are a few things that will make a photo "pop" straight out of the camera, but there's too many variables that will influence that. Here are a few things that will play a part:
1) your lighting
2) your exposure settings
3) the lens you are using
4) your camera's custom settings
5) the contrast of the scene

Ironically, point & shoot cameras will often yield better results SOOC because the manufacturers have optimized the cameras to produce better results for their target audience (the more novice shooter) DSLR's are assumed to go to the more advanced shooter who will want to make their own decisions on what their cameras will yield. That said, you can assume that pretty much all shots will be improved with some degree of post processing work.

Concerning your very cute image, I think it will benefit by a tighter and straightened crop. In that regard, I've attached an example for you to consider.

Thanks for the feedback! I obviously want to make sure that I am taking the best pics I can to start off with but it is good to hear that post processing is so normal/expected.

Attachments don't work well at times on this site for one reason or another. Try this in the future: Posting Photos from Flickr [July 2010 Update]

Nice shot though! I like the angle and the "pose"
