No, not a dumb question at all! SOOC = "Straight Out Of Camera" - no editing.

Thank you for posting the SOOC. It's really underexposed, did you shoot in RAW?

No, actually I've only tried to shoot raw a couple times. I've read how to do it but haven't practiced enough. It's something I maybe need to start trying? I know I probably tend to overdo the editing. I've posted on here only a few times, but need to post more to get some more critique and ideas.

What program are you using to edit? Susan is right, the first issue to correct is the underexposure which is best done if you shoot RAW, but can still be accomplished on a .jpg. Once you bring the exposure up you notice that your granddaughter has very lovely skin and it doesn't need as much 'work' as you did in your original. Her pose feels somewhat uncomfortable but might have worked better if you had gotten a little lower. I think I would have liked to see a little less of her back and more room added to her left. Also be careful where you crop, it seems odd her elbow is missing.
This is by no means perfect, but here is a quick edit I did to illustrate how I would approach this if it were mine. I opted for a bit of a soft / dreamy look based on your original edit. All of my editing was done in PSE 8 ![]() If you would like specifics on what I did I would be happy to detail further. Colleen |
