Christmas Baby

This is one of the first pics I took with my dslr camera so did not have it on manual as I do now. I like the composition, but would like to know what to do with color, cropping, etcmaking the picture clearer for future photos.

I love the baby's sweet and peaceful face, but my eye is distracted by both the lights in the background and the patterned blanket in the foreground. Part of the problem is that the black and white conversion is somewhat flat, so that the baby's face and clothes all seem gray, without much tonal range. For next time try to work with more available light so that the baby is well-lit, without the distraction of more brightness in the rest of the image.
