Default First Shoot with Studio Lights

This was taken during a practical night at camera club, my first time experimenting with proper studio lights.

This was side lit, with a black reflector on the opposite side which is supposed to suck the light from the side in shadow to increase the contrast.

Be interested to hear your thoughts / opinions.

Exposure 0.008 sec (1/125)
Aperture f/8.0
Focal Length 114 mm
ISO Speed 200

I beleive that you accomplished what you set out to do/learn.. just not sure that I like that much contrast on a female face.

I love it! Like Papa said, the norm is not to have that much contrast across a female face, but my tastes lately have been just this. I think you did well, and I love the catchlights.
The only thing I may have done differently would have been to back light it to get a little more separation from the background.

Thank you - I really enjoyed playing about with different positions and settings, but it was very experimental!

Thank you, I'm pleased you like it. We did try backlighting but not with the sidelighting. I will bear this in mind next time I am playing about.

I would appreciate the thoughts of any one else with an opinion...

Default good work

I think you did a good job playing with the light. I agree with the pp about maybe using a back light. I also have to say NICE WORK on getting that eye lit up even in the shadow! I think that makes the photo. Did you do that in camera or post?

Nice work. The black reflector did its job. Dramatic lighting well executed.

I Agree with Luke's sentiments about the rim light. I also mourn the loss of her neck, and element I can't seem to get past here.

In camera. Thank you very much. I've made a mental note about the rim light.

Thanks for your comment. Yes, I did wonder if the neck would be an issue. I have the raw file, so could probably merge two exposures to get it back... worth it?

I'd say yes, it's definitely worth trying. Floating heads are something I just can't get around. It would be different if there was some other shape like a shoulder or something, but just the head and cascading hair with a big hole there?... a little creepy.
