Hello everyone

this is my best portrait I took so far....well maybe not the best but the one I like the most

I'm new to photography btw, I just got my Camera on last thanksgiving

please critique and tell me how to improve

portrait

Camera: Canon Rebel T2i
Exposure: 1/100
Aperture: f/1.8
Focal Length: 50 mm
ISO Speed: 3200

It was pretty dark outside, a very cloudy day and I did not want to use flash so I had to raise the ISO

I like the framing and composition. Not crazy about the flat colour, could do with an increase in vibrance. Contrast looks fine, again, just feels flat, probably more to do with your lighting, or lack thereof.

The face looks soft, which is either a function of the 1.8 and the ISo (probably more the latter than former, but I don't know the relative ISO performance of your body). The shallow DoF works well for the environment however.

One thing I don't particularly is that it's a pretty obvious crotch shot, which isn't appealing no matter how casual you're going. Also be careful that the sole of the shoe, especially one obviously coloured or patterned such as this, because it turns into a unnecessary distraction. Also feels odd that the face is looking down the barrel of the shot, but his eyes are disconnected.

^^ I agree with everything Niresangwa wrote, except for the colors; they are drab but it fits his expression. The sole of the shoe and the crotch shot were the two big things that jumped out at me. The shoe could be fixed in photoshop or gimp pretty easily but you are stuck with that pose .

You may want to try this one again with a longer lens. The 50mm at that distance allows for quite a bit of size distortion from his right foot in the front to his right hand and makes his back arm look tiny. A longer lens will compress the depth more to help this.

Good job!
