Default First attempt at a self portrait

Did I get too carried away with the over-exposure??

no, the over exposure of the background is fine if that is the look you were going for, it's the under-exposure of the subject that is limiting...you might try and add some local exposure to the person...unfortunately underexposure on digital is really hard to recover without gaining a ton or noise.

Thanks for the input, yea I didn't have my flash with me as I forgot to put it back in my camera bag when I packed up to leave the house so fill flash was out of the question. I tried to obtain a quasi-silhouette effect which I thought would be exacerbated by blowing out the background, but I guess I shouldn't have forgotten the flash!

Try the silhouette... just make the subject darker... right now its not dark enough for me to think you were going for a silhouette...
